Project ASTEROID News

• December 1, 2007: Project ASTEROID is please to announce that Mr. Eric Palmer, our optical designer, has produced a conceptual optical design for a 2.5-m telescope that is available elsewhere on this Web site (please look at the top under Telescope, then at the left under Telescope Performance Modeling, then click on the link to "optical design" in the first paragraph). Furthermore, Mr. Caisey Harlingten has funded an optical design of a 1.5-m telescope as a first step towards using the Winer Observatory 1.5-m ULE blank in a telescope.

• May 2, 2006: Project ASTEROID is pleased to announce that Mr. Caisey Harlingten, a former technology investor turned astronomer, has given Project ASTEROID a Challenge Grant of $1 million. He has also funded an optical design study as the first step of the Design Study Phase. For details, please see Mr. Harlingten's donation letter.

• January 22, 2005: Project ASTEROID is pleased to announce that minor planet orbit and photometry expert Dr. Alan W. Harris has joined our distinguished group of Special Project Advisors.

• January 14, 2005: Project ASTEROID is pleased to announce that Apollo 9 astronaut Russell L. ("Rusty") Schweickart has joined our distinguished group of Special Project Advisors.

• November 8, 2004: Project ASTEROID has received an anonymous Challenge Grant worth $50,000. Funds are contingent on raising the remaining $250,000 needed for the Design Study Phase ($300,000) and the funds required to grind and polish the telescope's primary mirror (estimated at $800,000 including metrology, shipping case, and handling fixtures.)
